President’s Support for Transportation Bill Is Welcome News
WASHINGTON, DC (September 7, 2010) – Today, the American Highway Users Alliance, a non-profit organization that represents the interests of drivers and businesses, applauded President Obama’s support for a six year transportation bill.
President Obama announced his support for highway, bridge, and other infrastructure investments yesterday, at a Labor Day speech to union workers in Milwaukee.
The President called for bipartisan support and said:
“I want America to have the best infrastructure in the world. We used to have the best infrastructure in the world. We can have it again. We are going to make it happen. Over the next six years, we are going to rebuild 150,000 miles of our roads – that’s enough to circle the world six times.”
Greg Cohen, President of the American Highway Users Alliance remarked:
“Presidential leadership on the long-delayed highway bill has been desperately needed to get America moving again. The last six-year highway bill expired nearly a year ago. Meanwhile motorists sit in traffic, bridges and pavements fall into disrepair, and urgent life-saving safety investments go unfunded.
“Our trucking routes need particular attention, because an inefficient National Highway System chokes the economy and raises the price of goods, at a time when families and businesses need products to be affordable and delivered on-time.
“The details of a bill are extremely important to highway users. It is critical that taxpayers have an opportunity to review the President’s proposal. Motorists, truckers and other companies that fund the Highway Trust Fund will look to Congress to pass a bill that improves the effectiveness of investments; eliminating bureaucratic delays, and sharply increasing funding to make roads safe and efficient.
“The President is right to focus on this bill as an economy booster. Highway investments are shown to generate as much as $6 in economic benefits for every $1 invested. The President has created an important opportunity for Congress to develop a bipartisan bill. The American Highway Users Alliance looks forward to participating in the legislative process.”
The American Highway Users Alliance looks forward to the opportunity to review a Presidential proposal to jump-start the six year bill by allowing state and local governments to borrow up to $50 billion for investments in roads, airports, and rail. However we caution that this one-time boost is an insufficient funding mechanism to stabilize long-term funding for highway improvements nationwide. We urge the President to focus on sustainable revenue sources to fund a stable and growing Highway Trust Fund.
The American Highway Users Alliance represents motorists, RV enthusiasts, truckers, bus companies, motorcyclists, and a broad cross-section of businesses that depend on safe and efficient highways to transport their families, customers, employees, and products. Highway Users members pay the taxes that finance the federal highway program and advocate public policies that dedicate those taxes to improved highway safety and mobility.
