(WASHINGTON, DC) – The American Highway Users Alliance issued the following statement, regarding proposals to suspend the federal gasoline tax:

“The American Highway Users Alliance agrees with President Trump’s focus on American consumers. The current discussion around gasoline taxes invites an opportunity to consider more comprehensive reform to ensure the long-term viability of the Highway Trust Fund. Rather than temporarily suspending the federal gas tax, Congress should eliminate it entirely along with all of the truck taxes and replace them with a weight-based user fee, collected by states at registration and paid by all road users. This approach would modernize infrastructure funding, close the nearly $300 billion shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund, and provide a stable, long-term solution to support the nation’s transportation system.

This approach accomplishes several major goals at once:

  • Lowers costs at the pump for American drivers
  • Ensures every vehicle pays its fair share, regardless of fuel type
  • Protects long-term funding for American roads and bridges
  • Helps close the nearly $300 billion Highway Trust Fund shortfall
  • Reduces dependence on outdated taxes designed for another era

President Trump is right the current structure is not working, we believe a permanent replacement for the gas tax, not a temporary suspension, is the best way to rebuild America’s infrastructure and protect taxpayers.”
