The Highway Users’ top legislative priority for 2011 is passage of a new, robust federal highway bill. The previous six-year bill, SAFETEA-LU, expired on September 30, 2009. The Highway Users is pleased that both the House and Senate have overwhelmingly passed a six-month, clean extension of the 2005 highway bill at current funding levels. The House passed the bill by voice vote, while the Senate recorded a vote of 92 to 6. This bill will keep highway programs authorized through March 31, 2012. In the meantime, we urge Congress to pass a robust, new multi-year highway bill with reforms and streamlining. Continue reading
ROADS SAFE ActThe Highway Users has endorsed H.R. 2324 and S.510, the ROADS SAFE Act. This legislation would fund promising research to passively detect drunk drivers before they ever turn the ignition key. Continue reading

The Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee voted unanimously (18-0) to favorably report a two-year highway reauthorization bill to the U.S. Senate. The meeting was notable by an atmosphere of bipartisanship — which is rare in Washington this year. Continue reading
