Advocacy

The Highway Users’ top legislative priority for 2011 is passage of a new, robust federal highway bill.  The previous six-year bill, SAFETEA-LU, expired on September 30, 2009.  We are also focused on growing our ever-expanding grassroots network online through Facebook and Twitter.  Read more about our key issues and policy statements below:

Current Legislation
Tell Congress to Pass the Highway & Energy Bill

A tight vote is expected in the House for the 5-year highway bill. The House bill is a conservative approach to infrastructure investment. It prioritizes highway investments to focus on interstate commerce routes and improved safety. The bill reduces Washington red-tape, better aligns highway spending to highway user fees, reduces waste and diversion, increases States’ programming flexibility, and eliminates earmarks. Tell Your Congressman to Vote “AYE” on H.R. 7. Continue reading

Congress Passes Six-Month Highway Bill Extension

The Highway Users is pleased that both the House and Senate have overwhelmingly passed a six-month, clean extension of the 2005 highway bill at current funding levels. In the meantime, we urge Congress to pass a robust, new multi-year highway bill with reforms and streamlining. Continue reading

The Road to Authorization
The American Highway Users Alliance proposes this plan to serve as an easy-to-read roadmap and reference for elected and appointed officials as they grapple with the major policy and funding issues that must be addressed in the upcoming surface transportation authorization bill.

This document does not attempt to provide an all-encompassing legislative proposal that satisfies every need of every individual member of the alliance. Rather, The Highway Users presents a united perspective from the pro-mobility, pro-highway community that clearly describes key priorities that define the core national values that need to be addressed in the next surface transportation bill.
